Bombardier CRJ - Canadair Regional Jet

Bombardier CRJ Lufthansa

The Bombardier CRJ Canadair Regional Jet is developed from the Challenger business jet, built by Canadair, that is now part of Bombardier Aerospace. The CRJ was the first really successful jet in the 50-seater class. It is often flown by regional airlines, which often operate it as a feeder aircraft to the hubs of major airlines.

The Canadair CRJ was originally designed to fly fast jet-services on relatively long sectors for which turboprop aircraft are rather slow. Canadair started studying a 24-seat stretch of the CL-600 Challenger in the early 1980s for the commuter aircraft market, but from 1987 considered a much more stretched aircraft. In 1989 Canadair decided to go ahead with the regional jetliner. The first flight took place on May 10 1991. The first CRJ was delivered to Lufthansa's regional subsidiary Cityline in October 1992.

Apart from the stretched fuselage the Regional Jet has a new wing, a digital EFIS flightdeck, a new undercarriage and more powerful engines. From the CRJ100 standard aircraft Canadair soon developed Extended Range (ER) and Long Range (LR) versions. The CRJ200 has more efficient engines and is also available in ER and LR versions. The CRJ440 is a 44-seat variant with identical dimensions as the CRJ200 but with reduced capacity to comply with pilot scope clause restrictions which forbid regional airlines to operate aircraft with 50 seats or more on behalf of major airlines.

After more than one thousand aircraft being sold, production has come to a stop in favour of the larger versions CRJ700, CRJ900 and CRJ1000. A cargo conversion program is being developed for existing aircraft as CRJ200PF (Package Freighter). The Challenger 800 and 850 are business jet versions of the CRJ200.
